Fort Payne High School senior JP Buffington is taking his passion for entrepreneurship to the next level as he prepares for what comes next. After graduation, he plans to continue expanding his pressure washing and cleaning company, Wizard Wash.
During his time at Fort Payne High School, Buffington has completed career pathways in both Agriculture and Construction/Framing, where he developed a passion for building. He credits both his classroom experiences and the business knowledge he has gained at home with helping shape his future path.
Buffington says his biggest mentor has been his father, who has spent more than 30 years in business. Through his guidance, Buffington has learned valuable lessons about leadership and perseverance. “He’s truly helped teach me everything he’s learned over the years,” Buffington said.
His academic achievements reflect his commitment to excellence. Buffington is proud to be a member of the National Honor Society and to have maintained straight A’s throughout his high school career.
In addition to academics, Buffington has been actively involved in extracurricular activities, including football and Key Club. He served as a team captain on the football team and as president of Key Club, where he helped lead community service efforts. Through these experiences, he developed strong leadership, teamwork, and perseverance skills.
“Football taught me that not everything goes your way,” he said. “You have to push through tough times with your team.”
Outside of school, Buffington has taken his entrepreneurial ambitions even further by launching and operating Wizard Wash, a company that provides pressure washing and exterior cleaning services. He currently manages a small team of part-time employees, and his work has already expanded beyond the local level. Recently, he secured a five-year contract to provide cleaning services for 49 schools in Huntsville City Schools—an accomplishment that reflects both the growth and professionalism of his company.
“My goal is to continue scaling my company while providing high-quality work and keeping my customers satisfied,” he said.
Buffington credits Fort Payne City Schools with helping prepare him for his future by providing hands-on learning opportunities and practical skills. Through his work in agriculture and construction classes, he has developed woodworking skills, learned to use tools effectively, and gained experience finding different ways to achieve his goals.
Looking ahead, Buffington hopes to continue expanding his company while building a reputation for high-quality, professional work. He is committed to building strong relationships with his customers and making a positive impact.
“I want to be known for the quality of my work and make sure that all of my customers are satisfied with any work I do for them,” he said.
As he prepares to graduate, Buffington encourages younger students to pursue their own paths and not feel limited by expectations.

FPHS Senior Spotlight: Sarah Grace Hilderbrand

Fort Payne High School senior Sarah Grace Hilderbrand is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey with a clear vision for her future. After graduation, she plans to attend Northeast Alabama Community College, where she will complete her first two years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in business management.
During her time at Fort Payne High School, Hilderbrand has been actively involved in both the Culinary Arts and Health pathways, experiences that have helped shape her interests and skills. She credits much of her academic enjoyment to her dual enrollment classes with Mrs. Shugart, who she says made learning engaging and enjoyable rather than a chore.
In addition to strong academics, Hilderbrand has been deeply involved in extracurricular activities. She has participated in Diamond Dolls, Leo Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Family, Career and Community Leaders of Alabama (FCCLA), and the Culinary Competition Team. Through these organizations, she developed valuable leadership and teamwork skills.
“The Culinary Competition Team taught me about leadership, teamwork, and perseverance,” Hilderbrand said. “I had to work with others under pressure, help guide the group, and keep trying even when things didn’t go perfectly.”
Her academic achievements reflect her dedication, as she was named a Junior Marshal and maintained a position in the top 10 of her class as a senior—an accomplishment she is especially proud of.
Hilderbrand also expressed gratitude for the educators who have influenced her journey, particularly Mrs. Everett. “She has been one of the most understanding and caring teachers I have met,” Hilderbrand said. “She made me feel important and seen without judgment.”
Throughout high school, Hilderbrand says she gained important life skills such as responsibility, time management, and effective communication. Through her classes, projects, and extracurricular activities, she learned how to stay organized, meet deadlines, and work effectively with others, all while growing more independent and confident in her abilities. She credits Fort Payne City Schools with helping prepare her for both the challenges and opportunities ahead.
One of the most valuable lessons she learned was how to manage stress in a healthy way.
“With assignments, tests, and activities, I learned how to stay calm, prioritize my work, and take things one step at a time,” she said. “High school taught me that stress is normal, but handling it in a healthy way helps me stay focused and do my best. That’s something I’ll carry with me into college, work, and other challenges.”
Looking ahead, Hilderbrand hopes to build a career in business management or eventually own her own business. No matter where her path leads, she is committed to making a positive impact in her career and community.
“I want to be someone people can rely on,” she said. “I hope to make a positive impact by helping others and using the skills and lessons I’ve learned to support my community. FPHS Senior Spotlight: Stokes Latham

Fort Payne High School senior Stokes Latham is looking ahead to the future with a clear vision and strong academic foundation. After graduation, he plans to attend Mississippi State University, where he will pursue a degree in landscape architecture and landscape construction management.
During his time at Fort Payne High School, Latham has challenged himself through a rigorous academic schedule that includes Advanced Placement courses such as AP U.S. History, AP English Language and Composition, AP Physics 1, AP Biology, and AP English Literature and Composition, along with courses like Hospitality and Tourism and Guitar. He credits much of his academic growth to Mr. Garrett’s AP U.S. History class, where he developed skills in writing, note-taking, and approaching complex topics with confidence.
Latham says Mr. Garrett has had the greatest influence on his high school experience. “I was pushed to work outside of my comfort zone and take on challenges I would naturally avoid,” he said. “His classes helped me become a better writer, note-taker, and overall student.” Beyond the classroom, Latham says Mr. Garrett’s leadership in his church’s youth group has played a significant role in shaping his character and strengthening his desire to live a Christ-centered life.
His academic achievements reflect his commitment to excellence. Latham earned a 33 on the ACT, achieved qualifying scores on multiple AP exams, and has maintained all A’s throughout high school—an accomplishment he takes great pride in.
In addition to academics, Latham has been actively involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including varsity golf, Key Club, Peer Helpers (Leadership Team), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Student Council, National Honor Society, church youth group, church worship team, and community service initiatives. Through these experiences, he developed a strong work ethic, leadership skills, and a deeper understanding of teamwork.
“Through golf and other activities, I’ve learned the value of hard work and determination,” Latham said. “As a member of the golf team, I’ve put in countless hours working to improve my game. While it may never be perfect, I’ve seen consistent growth as a result of perseverance. I’ve also grown in my ability to work as part of a team. Through experiences like group community service, I’ve learned that humility and being willing to learn from others leads to more effective teamwork and success.”
Latham credits Fort Payne City Schools with providing an environment that allowed him to grow and excel both academically and personally. Through the support of his teachers, he was encouraged to take on challenges and push beyond what once seemed overwhelming, preparing him for the transition to college life.
One of the most valuable skills Latham gained during high school was learning how to write effectively. Through his AP courses, he was challenged to write far more than he had previously experienced, helping him grow both his confidence and ability as a writer. With the guidance of teachers like Mrs. Byrd, Mrs. Shugart, and Mr. Garrett, he was introduced to new techniques and strategies that strengthened his writing skills and overall academic performance. He says these experiences have made him a more effective communicator—something he knows will benefit him throughout his college career and beyond.
Looking ahead, Latham hopes to build a successful career in landscape architecture, with a particular interest in golf course design. He aspires to one day start and operate his own design firm, creating courses that both conserve the natural environment and provide a unique and enjoyable experience for others.
“I want to create designs that make the best use of the natural landscape while allowing others to experience the same joy in golf that I have,” he said. “I hope to bring innovative and unique ideas into my work by using new methods and materials that help conserve and protect the environment. I also want to create designs that not only enhance the game, but inspire the next generation of landscape architects.”
As he prepares to graduate, Latham encourages younger students to challenge themselves both academically and socially. He emphasizes the importance of stepping outside of one’s comfort zone, asking questions, and seeking help when needed. He also highlights the value of building strong relationships with teachers and taking advantage of the opportunities available.
“I would advise younger students to challenge themselves both academically and socially,” he said. “By pursuing classes and experiences that may seem challenging or overwhelming, you’re pushing yourself to grow and become comfortable with what may initially feel daunting. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help. Fort Payne City Schools is a place where you can do that. Asking for help builds both personal character and knowledge, and can even lead to a deeper understanding. The relationships I’ve built with my teachers and administrators have shaped me both academically and personally, and their advice has helped guide me along the way.”
As graduation approaches, Stokes Latham is ready to continue his academic journey at Mississippi State University.

FPHS Senior Spotlight: Yvette Tambunan

Fort Payne High School senior Yvette Tambunan is preparing to take the next step in her academic journey with an impressive list of accomplishments and a clear vision for her future. After graduation, she plans to attend Vanderbilt University, where she will study mechanical engineering.
During her time at Fort Payne High School, Tambunan challenged herself through a rigorous and well-rounded academic schedule that included dual enrollment, Advanced Placement, honors, and STEM-based career technical courses. She sought to take full advantage of the opportunities available, pushing herself to grow in a variety of academic areas.
Tambunan credits much of her academic inspiration to her 10th grade chemistry class with Mr. Boyer. “He made learning feel meaningful and engaging,” she said. “He genuinely cared about his students understanding the material, not just completing assignments.”
Her academic achievements reflect both her dedication and perseverance. Tambunan was accepted into Vanderbilt University, an accomplishment she describes as a moment of relief and validation after years of hard work. She was also named a National Merit Finalist, received the Kiwanis Citizenship Award, earned recognition through the National Recognition Program, and will graduate as salutatorian.
Beyond the classroom, Tambunan has been actively involved in extracurricular activities, most notably cheerleading and robotics. She served as co-captain of the junior varsity cheer team during the 2024–2025 season and mechanical captain for the robotics team during the 2025–2026 season. Through these leadership roles, she developed a deeper understanding of teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.
“Teamwork means trusting others and not trying to carry everything on your own,” she said. “Leadership is about helping others grow, especially those who are new and still learning. Perseverance means pushing through difficult moments, because those are the times that shape you the most.”
Tambunan credits the support of her counselors, teachers, and family with helping prepare her for what lies ahead. While she acknowledges that the future can be uncertain, she feels confident in the direction she is headed and the goals she has set.
Throughout high school, she also developed valuable personal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively, build meaningful connections, and engage in thoughtful conversations. Just as importantly, she says she has grown more comfortable and confident in who she is—something she will carry with her into the future.
Looking ahead, Tambunan hopes to pursue a career in design or drafting, with an interest in working for a company such as Lockheed Martin. As a woman in STEM, she is passionate about creating opportunities for others and expanding representation in the field.
“I want to be part of a future where growth is shared, and success helps open doors for those who come after me,” she said.
As she prepares to graduate, Tambunan encourages younger students to take advantage of every opportunity and not be afraid to try new things.
“Try everything,” she said. “You don’t have to have it all figured out right away. Join the club, try the sport, take the risk. Do things because you want to, not because you feel like you should. And remember, people aren’t paying as much attention as you think, so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.”
Reflecting on her time at Fort Payne High School, Tambunan says she will miss the people and the sense of familiarity that comes with seeing the same faces each day. Her biggest takeaway is simple: make your mark, but also enjoy the experience. “It took me time to realize how much fun high school can be, and I hope others don’t wait as long as I did.”
As graduation approaches, Yvette Tambunan looks ahead to the future with confidence and a strong sense of purpose.
