District Overview

Fort Payne City Schools has a rich history deeply connected to the growth, resilience, and transformation of the City of Fort Payne. Since the city's incorporation in 1889, education has served as a cornerstone of the community's development. What began as a school system supporting a small industrial town has evolved into a high-performing district recognized for academic excellence, innovation, workforce development, and student achievement.

The history of Fort Payne mirrors the broader story of Northeast Alabama. During the city's early years, economic growth was fueled by railroads, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. Schools were established to prepare young people for productive citizenship and meaningful employment while strengthening the community's social and economic foundation. As Fort Payne later emerged as the "Sock Capital of the World," the school system adapted to support a manufacturing-based economy through practical and vocational learning opportunities.

Over time, economic shifts required both the community and school system to evolve. The decline of traditional manufacturing and the rise of technology-driven industries transformed workforce expectations and educational priorities. In response, Fort Payne City Schools expanded academic offerings, increased access to technology, strengthened career pathways, and developed innovative programs designed to prepare students for success in a rapidly changing global economy. Today, the district serves as both an educational institution and a vital partner in the economic and civic development of the community.

Who We Are

Fort Payne City Schools serves approximately 3,371 students across six schools and educational programs, including pre-kindergarten, elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school campuses. The district reflects the diversity of the community it serves and remains committed to ensuring equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities for all students.

Approximately 785 students are identified as English Learners, representing a significant and growing portion of district enrollment. Additionally, nearly 350 students receive special education services. These demographics present opportunities and responsibilities as the district works to meet the academic, linguistic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of every learner.

Recognizing these diverse needs, the district has implemented specialized programs and support systems, including the Newcomer Academy, multilingual learner services, individualized special education programming, targeted interventions, and expanded instructional supports. Through these initiatives, Fort Payne City Schools strives to ensure that every student is provided the resources and opportunities necessary for success.

Through Advanced Placement coursework, dual enrollment opportunities, career academies, and workforce partnerships, students are empowered to pursue futures aligned with their interests, talents, and aspirations.
